spongebob
normally i don't like to write anything "serious" in my blogs just because i think it's a poor way of communicating. but i would like to take this time to write about issues circulating spongebob and dr. james dobson from focus on the family. i guess a lot of (media) people lashed out in anger after hearing that dr. dobson made a comment about spongebob squarepants being gay. well, we received a newsletter from dr. dobson which clarified what he really said. from what i read, spongebob, as well as other cartoon icons of today, had been used on a website to promote gay awareness and rights. he then went on to explain that he had never said spongebob was gay, but that he was concerned that cartoons were being used to promote these things. also, he commented on the kind of language they are using in the classroom about homosexuality and how tolerant the education system has become.
as i read about this issue and other similar ones in the media, i am truly saddened at the state of the world. in our quest for peace and tolerance, we have alienated minority groups and have made even more divisions, which further perpetuates the miscommunication, anger, and hatred.
furthermore, i am disappointed and ashamed at how the christian community has participated in these issues. instead of pointing the world to the Truth and to the real Source of peace, i have heard about violence and hate crimes against gays and i am shocked that so-called christians would actually do this in the name of God. it appears that some "christians" have missed the point entirely. it makes it even harder for us to reach the gay community with the love of Christ, which really should be our aim, rather than continuing to tell them that they're wrong and doomed to hell. there must be a balance between standing up for the Truth and showing love (which is not necessarily tolerance) towards people who do not know it.
as a christian, i cannot explain or excuse the acts that my fellow brothers and sisters have said or done in hatred towards the gay community. but i can repent on their behalf and ask for forgiveness. we are utterly lost and despaired without Christ and it is my hope that we would seek to fix our eyes on Him. i believe that if Jesus were walking on the earth today, the exact people He would be spending His time with are the ones that we as christians have alienated and judged. may we strive to live like Jesus.
another monday
so i've been sitting here for nearly three hours... my supervisor says it's going to be a slow week. great. i really should plan better for these times i'm just sitting here. i could do some reading maybe. hmm... anyway, i'm really bored and i wish this day would go by more quickly. :Þ

whoa, the fifth day in a row that i've blogged! should i be proud or embarrassed?
yesterday i actually left class early! i've never done that before... well, possibly back at uofm but i don't remember (cuz, you know, it was sooo long ago). but if you knew my professor for this class you would totally understand. she is soooo disorganized! it's kind of ironic considering she's teaching us about how to organize and design information... i guess some people just are not meant to be teachers. i wish schoolcraft had those evaluations that we had to do back at michigan. usually they were such a pain but now i realize they're actually useful.
anyway, this weekend i don't have any major plans. my brother's gonna be home for spring break, so we'll probably do something... maybe catch a movie. i haven't seen any movies at the theater since christmas. there's no one to watch movies with normally. maybe i'll go see "hitch." i hear it's funny. and i was reading how they had to strategically pair an interracial couple (will smith and eva mendes) so it wouldn't alienate white audiences. like, if the two main characters were both african american, white people wouldn't relate to it? that's kind of stupid. but, nonetheless - it is cool that they are showing more biracial/interracial relationships on film now... well, can't think of any others at the moment but yeah... i'm all about that (intervarsity has trained me well.) maybe soon we'll see an asian + other race couple doing a high-profile romantic comedy. i suppose that girl in harold and kumar go to white castle was non-asian... but she was in like 3 minutes of the movie. (yes i have seen harold and kumar, are you shocked?)
next weekend will be much more eventful cuz i'm goin to chicago and having a fun girls weekend with joyce and lindsay. yay! definitely looking forward to that. i hope it won't be snowing and yucky!
okay, that's all. gosh it's only 10:30 - this day is gonna be a long one.
new look!
hey, what do you think of the new look? i was working on a sailor mercury template but then decided it was too complicated and chose a pre-made template from blogger.com. i also found out that blogger has lots of new features i didn't know about like the "title" thing and also comments. i'm not sure how the commenting works but - i'll see if i can get it functioning. not that anyone leaves comments anyway...
hehe... okay just wanted to let everyone know about the new look. yayy
yes, here i am again, faithfully blogging even though no one pays attention anymore. :)
so i found out that the backstreet boys are going to be in concert in boston and i emailed my sister and asked if i could come visit her during that weekend. haha... actually, i would have seriously considered doing it if she wasn't planning on coming home that very weekend. too bad. it would have definitely been exciting to see them in concert again after YEARS of withdrawal. heehee... and from what i hear they are planning to do much smaller-scale shows this time around, which means more intimacy with the audience. yay! maybe tiffany and i will finally have closure and MEET them (the only thing keeping us from completely moving on with our lives... heehee). anyway, hopefully they will schedule some shows over here in the midwest. it's funny how seven years later i am still such a fan. maybe i should be concerned...
speaking of fan-dom... i realize that now that my life has come to a lull of routines and busyness, i find myself seeking short spurts of entertainment. first i was into movies in general, then disney movies and soundtracks, then romantic comedies, then sailor moon, and currently - cartoon crushes. haha... i guess it speaks to the way i am constantly looking to keep my mind engaged by meaningless entertainment instead of real life. i suppose i use it to escape things i don't want to think about. anyway... just reflecting a bit on that.

okay, so i did some research and i found that so many girls have cartoon crushes! yay for not being the only one (except, i'm 22 and i think the people on these message boards are much younger. ahem...)

i would have to say i still like darien the best. although, i think as sailor mercury i am not supposed to like sailor moon's destined husband. hahaha... oh yeah, and the other sailor moon hottie: andrew, the guy who works at the arcade (who is really just a blonde version of darien if you look closely. kinda like betty and veronica from the archie comics!)
i think a big part of the cartoon crush phenomenon has largely to do with the actors they find to do the voices... hm, except maybe donny osmond. hahahaha...
i was thinking maybe i should try blogging every day since i'm running out of things to do on the internet at work while i'm procrastinating from getting anything productive done (i mean, when you're checking your email every two minutes you know there must be SOMEthing else to do!)
so here are some tidbits of news from my world:
- just finished listening to my eleventh (i think) book on tape since september (Can you keep a secret? by sophie kinsella). i was wondering.. is it possible to develop a crush on a character from a book? i mean, mr. darcy from pride and prejudice is different, because it's not really mr. darcy, it's colin firth. but anyway, i heart "jack harper". hahaha... =) if anyone else likes chick lit you probably know what i'm talking about. i guess i'm just a hopeless romantic underneath my scares-away-boys cynical feminist exterior.
- i just heard Brian Littrell's new Christian single! aww, i was so excited because this is BRIAN, from the BACKSTREET BOYS ... and he's singing about how his identity is found "in Christ alone" - how awesome is that? so excited for his album, but we'll have to wait til the fall.
- HOWEVER, the backstreet boys are releasing their first single of the new album a month from tomorrow. yes, and this time i am not lying! their as yet untitled album is due out in june. can't wait!
- so i was streaming a christian radio station off my computer at work as i have been doing since last week, and all of a sudden i hear "caroline (caroline)...mighty fine (mighty fine)..." "roses really smell like poo poo poo..." and i couldn't turn it off! scariness. wonder how outkast turned up on lexington kentucky's christian radio station.
okay, guess that's all that's blogworthy for now (meaning: pointless things no one really wanted to know). you know what? i was reading some of my archives (yes, another pointless internet activity) and i realized that i actually used to be sort of funny... what happened? is there just nothing to laugh about anymore? sigh...
because i'm so obsessed with rom-coms, here's another list about them!

10. friendship - boy and girl are friends initially and then [oh my gosh i will die of surprise] they realize that their friendship has turned to romantic love (can you guess what happens?)

9. impossibilities - the lightheartedness of a rom-com often stems from the fact that there are extremely unrealistic circumstances that surround our two main characters
examples: groundhog's day (man wakes up every morning on february 2nd), kate and leopold (man travels through time), multiplicity (man clones himself--3 times--to spend more time with his wife), shallow hal (man gets hypnotized to see the inner beauty of women), what women want (man can hear inner voices of women)
(i just realized, all of these impossible things happen to men... hmm, wonder why...)
8. cinderella - reinforcing the anti-feminist idea that love can only happen to the beautiful, the ugly girl (who is only disguised as ugly because of course all hollywood actresses starring in a rom-com are beautiful) becomes pretty and gets the guy in the end.
examples: miss congeniality, the princess diaries (although - the guy did like her before she became pretty), never been kissed, sabrina, she's all that

wedding tales - an impending wedding serves as the base of the story, and usually, the two that planned on getting married usually don't end up going through with it because one of them has fallen for someone closely related to the wedding (also, because we're so original, the movie usually has the word "wedding" in its title)
- the wedding planner, the wedding singer, four weddings and a funeral, my best friend's wedding, runaway bride, my big fat greek wedding, the wedding date (have not yet seen this one), sweet home alabama, serendipity

high school - we all know that high school is really this extreme: that the "cool" kids rule over all the other students, and that the most important thing in the world is getting a date to the prom

initial dislike - what is more endearing than two people who initially can't stand each other but end up falling in love? usually the chemistry between these two fighters is pretty obvious from the start, but we are still excited at the end when they get together

fate - the world tells us that "mr. or mrs. right" is out there... and movies tell us exactly the same thing.

forbidden love - modern-day romeos and juliets, except instead of killing themselves, they usually end up together and everybody's happy.
examples: never been kissed (teacher and student), pretty woman (rich man and prostitute), save the last dance (white girl and black guy), sense and sensibility (poor[er] woman and engaged, rich man)

the love triangle - sometimes it's two guys and a girl, or two girls and a guy, OR both the main girl and guy have someone else who ends up getting dumped so that they can get together at the end. either way we find ourselves fighting for the underdog and get warm fuzzies when the "right" pair finally gets together
examples: bridget jones' diary, french kiss, sabrina, serendipity, sweet home alabama, the truth about cats and dogs, you've got mail

LIES, LIES, LIES! - i have found that almost half of all the romantic comedies i've watched have something to do with one of the main characters lying to the other (or sometimes both of them are lying). this disappoints me because it gives the sense that lying to someone can be both humorous and tolerable because "love conquers all." i don't agree with this but must admit i end up watching these movies anyway.
examples: how to lose a guy in 10 days (i'm writing a story about how to dump you/i made a bet that i can get you to fall in love with me), head over heels (i'm actually an FBI agent), while you were sleeping (i'm not engaged to your brother;, i've never even spoken to him in my life), the prince & me (i'm actually the prince of denmark), chasing liberty (your father, the president, hired me to follow you around), the truth about cats and dogs (i'm not a 5'11" blonde but a short brunette), she's all that (i made a bet that i could make you prom queen)

appeal: actually, i've only seen this movie once, but almost all of my girlfriends have admitted to thinking Dmitri was hot.

appeal: tall/dark/handsome, asian, and always comes to the sailor scouts' rescue when they need it the most.
